Theory + Thematics

In my first post, below, I described some of the main ideas that might be interesting to you in the consideration of design and learning…The names I mentioned were Jean Jacques Rousseau and Ivan Illich, Stuart Hall and Pierre Bourdieu. You can add Jacques Ranciere to that group too. The work of Michel Foucault is especially important in relation to the consideration of administration and power. Foucault is best known for describing the systemic power of medical and judicial administration; but you can apply his ideas to the consideration of education.

The ideas described by these authors can be used to frame your own practice in relation to a specific situation (classroom or otherwise) or to consider the bigger institutional and systemic issues attaching to power structures.

You can also consider your own experience of learning within and without the system of education. That could be a good basis for elaborating a critical reflection on your own practice.
